Victoria 3 – Population Needs

Pop Needs

After playing the game I learned some stuff I thought was interesting or useful to know so I’d thought I’d share.

There are a total of 14 Possible needs that activate and deactivate at different wealth levels. They are:

Intoxicants All Levels

Heating All Levels:

  • Basic Food 1 – 29
  • Simple Clothing 1 – 14
  • Crude Items 5 – 14
  • Standard Clothing 10 – 39
  • Household Items 10 – 44
  • Services 10 – 99
  • Luxury Drinks 15 – 99
  • Luxury Items 15 – 99
  • Free Movement 15 – 99
  • Communication 20 – 99
  • Luxury Food 20 – 99
  • Art 30 – 99

Some Takeaways:

  • Levels 1 – 4 have 4 needs
  • Levels 5 – 10 have 5 needs
  • Levels 10 – 14 have 8 needs (yes they can and do double dip on their demand for clothes)
  • levels 15 – 19 have 9 needs (dropped 2 picked up 3)
  • levels 20 – 39 have 11 needs (a joke somewhere about dropping Basic food for art at 30)
  • levels 40 – 44 have 10 needs
  • Levels 44 – 99 have 9 needs

It’s funny to me that pops get needier and needier until level 40. then they get less needy. Albeit the needs are extremely expensive now but still.

Pops DO increase their consumption of a good if they have multiple demands that it can substitute for. Clothes for instance, at wealth levels 10 – 14, are purchased once to solve their ‘simple clothing’ need and then more are purchased to solve their ‘standard clothing’ need.

Services are especially notable as a good because not only does it get a need all to itself like clothes but services can also serve as a substitute for 3 other needs as well (free movement, communication, and art) meaning it solves 4 needs all on its own.

My first game was Naughty Dog’s Crash Bandicoot (PlayStation) back in 1996. And since then gaming has been my main hobby. I turned my passion for gaming into a job by starting my first geek blog in 2009. When I’m not working on the site, I play mostly on my PlayStation. But I also love outdoor activities and especially skiing.
