Subverse – Steam Deck Guide

Quick Guide to Play on Steam Deck

By Justenrules.

Subverse runs well enough on the steam deck with only two main issues. The controls can be hard to reconfigure, and cutscenes don’t run properly with the standard version of proton.

Fixing the controls is as simple as downloading a community control scheme.

Fixing the cutscenes requires downloading a third party program called proton GE. To do so follow these steps:

  • Boot your steam deck into desktop mod by pressing the steam button -> scrolling down to power -> select desktop mode.
  • Open the discover store and search for a program called ‘ProtonUp-qt’. Download the program and run it when it’s finished. Click ‘add version’ and it will bring up a selection for the version of Proton GE you wish to download. It should automatically select the latest version so just press ‘install’.
  • Once it finishes installing boot back into gaming mode using the shortcut on your desktop.
  • In gaming mode navigate to subverse in your library and click the gear icon to access its steam settings.
  • Under the compatability tab select ‘force the use of a specific steam play compatability tool’ and below that box select the version of GE-Proton that you downloaded.

Now you should be all set to play the game. If you wish to use a community save file for the game the the save file path for subverse is:

~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/1034140/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/Subverse/Saved/SaveGames

My first game was Naughty Dog’s Crash Bandicoot (PlayStation) back in 1996. And since then gaming has been my main hobby. I turned my passion for gaming into a job by starting my first geek blog in 2009. When I’m not working on the site, I play mostly on my PlayStation. But I also love outdoor activities and especially skiing.
