I strongly recomend air mages. Storm, mist, arrow ward/fend, alone or better in combination will largely make irrelevant archers (mist alone isn’t enough in fort battles but the other two make wonders).
From here on it means that your troops must beat the enemy’s troops. This setup really favours elite units where small numbers can slowly grind overwhelming numbers. This involves recruiting better troops and buffing them through spells.
Another option is to bring in a few ethereal troops. Even just two fire elementals cast on the sides of the battlefield will be able to attack archers directing on the wall.
Other options involve glamour summons but I can not recommend enough the air spells as it’s the only way to keep mages safe from ranged units’ increased range.
