Total War: Warhammer III – Suggestions for a Higher Framerate (FPS)

FPS Tips

If you’re struggling with performance or just want to improve framerate a bit, try to follow these suggestions.

  • Never “run in window”, it kills FPS.
  • Set antialiasing to FXAA. There is no visual difference if you’re running at a decent resolution.
  • Shadows are very demanding but you kinda need them. Try balancing visuals with framerate. High is enough, I think.
  • You can disable Screen Space Shadows without losing much.
  • Ditto, disable Screen Space Reflections, also.
  • Lighting Quality is heavy as a stone. It’s nice to have, but on low you get a significant boost.
  • Same for Fog, but I don’t think it even adds much. Keep it on low.
  • SSAO is also quite demanding, unless you have a quite powerful GPU you can live without it.

The other settings have little impact on framerate or are very important to overall visuals (especially Unit Detail and Unit Size).

My first game was Naughty Dog’s Crash Bandicoot (PlayStation) back in 1996. And since then gaming has been my main hobby. I turned my passion for gaming into a job by starting my first geek blog in 2009. When I’m not working on the site, I play mostly on my PlayStation. But I also love outdoor activities and especially skiing.

  1. v sync is messed up.
Playing with it on in 4k res eats my frames down to 39fps.
I have a 2080 ti on an i9. I should be playing 4k smoother. It doesn’t matter what settings I downscale (shadows, lighting, textures, etc) it barely rises above 39fps.

With it off, I can get to 47.

I can play tw2 in 4k at high w/ a few ultra settings at a steady 55fps easy. Something is wonky with their optimization.

    Again.

  2. Thank you for your suggestions, indeed they do help!
On a related note, do you use the in-game sharpening option or do you prefer externally applied solutions, like Nvidia’s sharpening for example.
Also, I think ssao is still hit n miss, depending on the map it can have negative visual impact.

  3. Yeah, FXAA makes the game look crystal clean while TAA is blurry. Better visuals with better performance.

I tried with Fog on low and high and the only difference I saw was 20 extra FPS.
