DRAGON BALL: Sparking! ZERO – Perception Counter Explained

Explanation of Perception Counter

By txm.

If you’re hitting someone while they face you, they have several ways to escape. Perception can be used mid-combo. Perception is also easier to get off if you interrupt a rush attack (light string) with a heavy since it’s slower (also easier to vanish). I think Super Perception is the perception that uses skill bars, so it’s a free get-out-of-jail card at the cost of skill bars.

To get off your combo, you have to get behind your opponent and give them backshots, which may require you to sidestep them (plenty of other ways). There are character combo strings that have a turn-around heavy (turns opponent around) like Nappa.

Now to circle back quickly to combo strings, you don’t always have to try super hard to get behind someone if you know your character’s heavy stun (think gut punch or gut kick).

It leaves them in a long stun which you can also use to get supers off, but I would recommend sidestepping then continuing your combo. It may look like Light x5, dash forward, Light x5, dash forward, Light Light Heavy, which would be combo reset I think (if that Light Light Heavy string is a gut punch), allowing you to combo even further beyond.

In most cases, you won’t get the second 5x Light off while backshotting someone since they may super counter or Z vanish. This is where mix-ups and knowing combo strings comes in handy because you can switch up the timing of the second attack string, which will prevent them hopefully from countering.

So a mix-up could look like 5x Light, dash forward: 3 lights into Heavy (which will throw out flying kicks on Evil Buu), then Light till they get knocked back, dash in and continue whatever other strings (maybe next string includes a sweep).

I turned my passion for gaming into a job by starting my first geek blog in 2009. When I’m not working on the site, I play mostly on my PlayStation. But I also love outdoor activities and especially skiing.
