My Time at Sandrock – Official FAQ

Frequently Asked Question (FAQ)

What is My Time At Sandrock?

Sandrock is a city-state located in the Eufaula Desert within the Alliance of Free Cities. It was founded beside Martle’s Oasis on top of an ancient metropolis. At first, the city attracted many prospectors interested in an extensive supply of relics hidden beneath the desert, but, as time went on, the oasis dried up, leaving the city unable to sustain a large population. Many people left, leaving the place in its vagarious state found today.

Water is a premium in Sandrock, with the only source being from Martle’s Oasis. Wood is also a rare resource, as not many trees grow in the area. Most of the trees around the oasis were cut by the original settlers: nowadays, you’ll have to find alternatives. The good news is that there are vast amounts of relics around these parts, some of them even hidden in plain sight!

What is the relationship between Sandrock and Portia?

It was supposed to be a downloadable addition to My Time at Portia. But as we delved deeper into game production, we realized that in order to fully express the tale of Sandrock, we needed to start from scratch. We required better graphics, better optimization, more story, and more satisfying gameplay systems: basically, we needed better production values across the board.

What is the difference between Sandrock from Portia?

What you can expect to see is a game with a similar vision, made by a much more experienced dev team, with a much greater potential for expansion. Portia was coded by a team under a lot of pressure to deliver in a short time, so shortcuts were taken that have made things difficult for us to expand upon Portia at present.

We’ve released a series of free updates to try to give Portia the polish we always wanted it to have, but unfortunately, we’re very limited by some of the coding decisions we made early in development, and we haven’t been able to do what we want to do, nor what the fans have wanted us to do.

The deciding factor for us was that Portia’s framework could never handle multiplayer, and in order to make it work, we’d have to start from the ground up. When we were planning the Sandrock DLC, we realized that with our same engine, the new map would just be more of the same; it wasn’t really exciting for us, and we didn’t think the players would like it either.

Upon release, Sandrock will be a more polished game; the art will be better, there will be more music, the characters will be more in depth; essentially: the things people liked about Portia will be present, but we’ll have plenty of new stuff to make things feel fresh. Once we made the shift from DLC to making a new game, the development process has all been done with the future in mind, so the main difference is that Sandrock will be what we always wanted Portia to be.

How long do you estimate it would take someone to beat the main campaign in the Early Access version?

According to our beta players’ experience, players can expect around 20-30 hours to finish the ACT 1, but it’s can be variable up on to your play style.

Does My Time At Sandrock have multiplayer features?

We’ve heard you, and we are aiming to have a specific game mode for multiplayer, without interfering with our development of single-player. Much is still on the drawing board or in the design phase, but the aim is to support at least 4 players in an open world map, separate from the single-player map. Players will be able to work, fight, and dungeon dive together. We’re also looking to create multiplayer-specific missions and storylines.

Will the console versions contain the same content as the PC version?

Yeah. We’re going to self-port to consoles so that we can make sure all the content is consistent across all platforms. But because of the development process, the console version’s update maybe later compared to the PC version. Slightly later, though.

What is the basic gameplay loop? What fail states does the game have?

You arrive in Sandrock after seeing an advertisement calling Builders to join the community. Once you’re in Sandrock, and you’ll take over the workshop form a retired builder, Mason (shows in Portia too). Commerce Guild welcomes you and provides you with your own workshop. From there, you will befriend locals, take on work, expand your workshop, and do everything you can to revitalize Sandrock, at the same time, you’ll uncover the secrets around the town.
