What is Before Your Eyes?

Before Your Eyes (BYE) is a unique gaming experience that will take you on an emotional journey where memories can disappear in the blink of an eye. Using a webcam that detects your real-life blinks, you can affect the narrative and interact with characters and the environment. With this unique gameplay mechanic, we want to bring YOU into the story. This will be an adventure unlike anything you have experienced in gaming before.

Is it necessary to play with a camera?

The game uses your webcam to follow your eyes and detect when you’re blinking. Although it is not required to play with the blink interactions, we highly encourage you to try it, as this is the best way to immerse yourself in the story and experience the emotional journey that BYE will take you on.

Is the camera recording my face?

No way! Before Your Eyes does not record anything from your camera. Your webcam is only used to detect your blinks in real-time to play the game and nothing else. Nothing is recorded, and we do not collect any data from BYE.

Is there a non-blink mode?

Yes, there is! You do not have to play with your blinks if you do not want to. BYE fully supports standard inputs, such as a mouse and keyboard, but we believe that you will get the most out of the experience if you play the game with your blinks – you will literally experience life flashing before your eyes.!

Can I play the game without blinking once?

If you don’t blink for an extended period of time, the moisture in your eyes evaporates, leaving your eyes tired, dry, and itchy. In the standard game mode, you cannot progress without blinking. We DO NOT recommend trying to play through the entire game without blinking. If you don’t want to play with the blink interaction for any reason, we suggest turning on the non-blink mode instead.

I am having technical issues with my camera. How can I troubleshoot?

We have tested the blink interaction mechanic in various settings, including extensive testing of players wearing glasses. Within the game, there is a simple and easy-to-use calibration tool that will guide you through the short set-up process. We are confident that you’ll be able to set up your camera using this tool.

Why am I experiencing blurriness, stuttering/low framerates, a black screen, or poor blink detection?

Playing on low spec hardware with high graphics/resolution settings may cause some issues including those mentioned above, so it’s important to experiment with lowering the settings of the graphics and resolution, to make sure they are appropriate for the computer’s specification.

Can I stream Before Your Eyes?

Yes! If you would like to have your webcam video feed featured on screen, you can enable that feature in the settings menu. The webcam that Before Your Eyes uses cannot be used by other software (like OBS) while running but the game window itself is open to capture.
