What kind of game is Achilles: Legends Untold?

Achilles: Legends Untold is an aRPG game in an isometric view based in the ancient Greece inspired world, where you take control of the hero Achilles and fight other great mythical warriors and beasts. Immerse yourself in real time combat, collect diverse weaponry and improve Achilles’ skills to beat the odds and fulfill your destiny.

What is the storyline of the game?

The game features our version of the myth about Achilles, taking place in the ancient Greece inspired world. The story focuses on the consequences of the Troyan war. We are playing as Achilles, fighting in Troy, dying, then returning (from the dead!) and trying to discover what has transpired. We see Greece after many years, conflicted and poorer. Achilles is initially lost, but slowly uncovers the truth about the past events. We meet the great king Agamemnon, his brother Menelaos and many others. We are tangled in a conflict connected even to the lord of the underworld. Based on the myth about Achilles we want to focus on the virtues like bravery, valor, destiny and honor. The game’s world is inhabited by people, animals, mythical creatures and a mix of various realistic and otherworldly locations.

What type of player is Achilles: Legends Untold for?

Achilles: Legends Untold is a game for fans of action-RPG titles with slow, thoughtful combat instead of button mashing. It features elements like collecting weapons, items, developing your character skills and stats in a way to best suit your playstyle.

How is the planned full version different from the Early Access version?

The full version of the game will include the full story of Achilles, along with two different endings depending on the player’s decisions. It will contain lots of new bosses, enemies and locations, but also improve upon the current content, expanding story quests and enhancing already available parts of the map. Achievements are also planned.

Who is developing Achilles: Legends Untold?

Dark Point Games, a small, young development studio based in Poland that’s made up of a team of 20 veterans with extensive experience in the industry, actively working together since the year 2019. This is a forge of creativity where we unleash our ambition to create high-quality video games.

Does the game have difficulty levels?

There are two difficulty levels available at the moment. The main differences are the damage received, the enemies’ aggressiveness and the Group AI Action (GAIA) group’s attack settings. On easier mode we’re also more agile, roll and break the attacks more easily.

What is GAIA and what does it mean?

GAIA (Group AI Actions) is an innovative AI behavior system that allows the enemies to cooperate in (non-scripted) realistic and surprising ways. The AI will adapt to your fighting style and attack you together with the other enemies, for example by jumping off each other’s shields to surprise you from above, or even use the environment. You’ll have to react to enemy tactics and count on your cleverness to get the upper hand.

Can we change the difficulty of the game as we go along?

Since the implementation of save slots (0.4.0 – Spider Cave Update) it’s not possible.

Is there a skill tree in the game?

Yes, there is a skill tree where we will unlock new actions to perform during combat, develop the main character’s passive skills and increase stats.

What is used to level up the character? Is there some currency (like souls), or is it just simple skill/attribute points?

Currently there is “fate” to gather and exchange for skill points, though the system will change in the upcoming update. Here’s the planned final version: during gameplay you will earn XP points and coins for defeating enemies. This can be used to unlock skills from the skill tree – each successive skill unlocked increases the cost of the next; or you can upgrade weapons at Hephaestus’ workshop.

Will character classes be available in the game?

No, there are no classes to choose from, nor the character creation. We want to tell a story of a particular, mythical warrior – Achilles.

Will there be “legendary” types of weapons and gear the players can get?

Acquired gear has a rarity stat (common, rare, epic, mythic) with higher rarity gear requiring more uncommon crafting materials to upgrade their stats. Basic materials are dropped randomly from regular enemies and destructibles, and higher-tier materials can be obtained by hunting down mythic creatures and defeating bosses or minibosses.

What type of defensive options are available to the player?

Dodge, dodge roll, blocking, and parrying. Additionally, dedicated items can increase resistance to particular types of damage.

What is the size of the world and the locations?

The Early Access version features a Troy level, which is a tutorial and an introduction to the Story – it’s entirely linear and relatively short. Upon completion, players will travel to the map of Greece, which is much larger and has a more open structure. From there, players will visit a few large sub-locations (city of Mycenae, Mountain Fortress inside the corrupted volcano) as well as several smaller locations (challenge rifts, abandoned basements, caves and palaces). For the full release we plan to expand the world to explore.

Are enemies dead for good once you’ve killed them, or do they respawn after a while?

Most of the enemies respawn after the hero’s death, but for example bosses stay defeated.

Will there be quests available?

There are main and side quests in Achilles: Legends Untold. The story will be expanded for the full release.

How long is the playing time?

We assume that for the average player, the game will take about 10-12 hours in Early Access and about 20-30 hours in the full version.

Does the game have one ending or more?

During the game, you can choose one of two paths that will lead you to a different end of the story.

How is replayability? Does the game have a definitive end once you are done with the story, or can you keep playing it without starting over from zero?

Currently there is a New Game Plus option in Early Access – you can start the campaign once again, keeping your unlocked skills and collected items. When you kill bosses you have a kill/save option that gives different rewards, so it’s an option worth trying out.

Does the game have a multiplayer mode?

Currently, the game has a rough co-op mode for two players. We’re working on the possible final version and will deliver co-op in some form.

Can player one use a keyboard and mouse, and player 2 use a gamepad? Or do two players use gamepads?

Currently, our game supports online co-op only – there is no ‘split-screen’ option on a single computer yet. When playing co-op, players can choose the controlling device as they please.
